i want more

I want more.

More clothes. A bigger TV. A new iPad. More money. More free time.

And my American life has convinced me I need all these things. If I can just get the new ______, then I’ll be happy.

Yet my faith and the teachings of Jesus pull me the other direction. They patiently whisper: You don’t need it. Yes, it may make you “happy” for a little while, but eventually it won’t. You don’t have to live this way. You can get off the hamster wheel. It’s possible to be content with what you have.

Jesus: Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? (Mark 8:34-37 Message)

  1. I don't know you, Pastor Jenny, but I do know Pastor Jon Disburg. I am SO enjoying your writings in both your column and Pastor Jon's Caffeinated God-Talk. Please extend my greetings to him and to Pastor Leila. Thank you for writing these thought-provoking columns. Anne Elly
